The Medellin Football Tour leaves from Purple Monkey Hostel 2 hours before the scheduled kick off time. The bus takes 30 minutes to arrive at the stadium and during that time you will hear the story of Atletico Nacional and Independiente Medellin, and the context of each game.
We arrive at the Atanasio Giradot stadium an hour and a half before the game where we spend an hour in the fan zone, grabbing a beer and soaking up the atmosphere from the arriving fans. For those who want to buy replica shirts or other merchandise, our guide can accompany you to the nearby sales points where they will haggle the best prices for you.
30 minutes before the game we head into the Atanasio Giradot Stadium, taking our seats for the football match. Once the game has finished, the guide will lead you back to the bus which will be waiting outside the ground to bring you back to the hostel.
Medellin is home to perhaps the two best teams in the Colombian Football League (Liga Aguila). In 2016 Independiente Medellin won the league title and had for a few months had bragging rights over their city rivals, Atletico Nacional who had won the title the year before. This was short lived however, as Atletico Nacional, who had qualified for the Copa Libertadores (the South American version of the Champions League) by virtue of them winning the league the year before, were crowned South American champions by beating the Ecuadorian team Independiente del Valle 2-1 on aggregate in the final.
Atletico Nacional won back the league title in 2017 although their rivals Independiente Medellin stole away bragging rights in the last game of the season, beating them 4-3 and stopping them from finishing the year unbeaten with one of the last kicks of the season.
